Sushan Chowhan

Dr. Sushan Chowhan is an agricultural researcher and consultant with expertise in agricultural science, crop science, sustainable farming, crop production, and agricultural technology transfer. As a consultant at Genesis Research Consultancy Limited (GRCL), he contributes scientific and practical knowledge to research and consultancy activities related to agriculture and rural development.

Originally from Brahmanbaria, Bangladesh, Sushan pursued his academic training in agriculture and horticulture at Gazipur Agricultural University (GAU) in Dhaka. He later moved to Japan to pursue a Ph.D. in Plant Glycobiology at Saitama University. His doctoral training strengthened his understanding of plant biology and the scientific mechanisms underlying crop development, providing a strong foundation for his subsequent work in agricultural research and innovation.

Professional Experience and Field Engagement

Sushan’s professional career combines agricultural research with extensive field-level experience. Early in his career, he worked with Lalteer Seed, where he contributed to hybrid seed production of cereal crops. This experience provided practical exposure to seed technology, crop improvement, and agricultural production systems.

He subsequently worked with national non-governmental organizations, including RDRS (Rangpur Dinajpur Rural Service), where he contributed to the dissemination of agricultural technologies such as liming for the management of acidic soils in the greater Sylhet region. His work with Manab Mukti Sangstha (MMS) under the Char Livelihood Programme (CLP) involved supervising vegetable production and promoting improved agricultural technologies among communities along the Jamuna River in Tangail.

His involvement in project surveys, evaluations, monitoring, and reporting for initiatives supported by international development partners, including USAID, DFID, and AusAID, further strengthened his expertise in agricultural development, field research, project implementation, and evidence-based evaluation.

Research and Technology Development

Sushan currently works as a researcher at the Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA), where he is involved in the planning and implementation of year-round agricultural research programmes. His responsibilities include experimental design and implementation, field data collection, data management, statistical analysis, and presentation of research findings.

A significant component of his work involves on-farm adaptive research, through which promising crop varieties and agricultural technologies are evaluated under farmers’ field conditions. Such research helps assess the practical suitability, productivity, and adaptability of technologies across different production environments.

He is also actively involved in agricultural technology dissemination through Farmer Field Schools, demonstrations, training programmes, workshops, and seminars. These activities help translate research findings into practical knowledge that can be adopted by farming communities.

His professional responsibilities additionally include farm management, staff supervision, research coordination, and liaison with government and agricultural organizations, including the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE), Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI), Bangladesh Sugarcrop Research Institute (BSRI), Cotton Development Board (CDB), local government institutions, and administrative authorities.

Sushan’s research interests encompass a broad range of agricultural and plant science disciplines, including crop improvement, crop production and management, seed technology, plant physiology, stress tolerance, cropping systems, farming systems, agricultural extension, and on-farm research.

He has published research articles in scientific journals and continues to contribute to the development and dissemination of agricultural knowledge.
